Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a FEMA-supported, state-backed, and locally run program that trains everyday people to be more prepared for emergencies and disasters. CERT classes teach basic skills like disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations so that neighbors can safely help each other when storms, fires, accidents, or other major incidents occur.
The idea behind CERT is simple: when a large disaster hits, first responders may be delayed or overwhelmed. CERT-trained residents can step in to take care of themselves, their families, and their neighbors until help arrives—doing things like checking on people, putting out small fires, providing basic medical aid, and helping organize a safe response in the community.
At Cooksville Volunteer Fire Department, our CERT program brings this national training model home to Vale. Classes are open to anyone who wants to be better prepared; there is no requirement to join a response team after the course. Whether you just want to be more ready at home, church, work, or in your neighborhood, CERT is a practical way to learn how to stay calm, stay safe, and help others when it matters most.
